Main Differences Between Idioms And Proverbs: Idioms and proverbs are frequently used interchangeably because there is a huge overlap between them, but that should not be the case because they mean two somewhat similar things that are slightly different. Proverbs are general sayings that are known to everyone; whereas, idioms are smart remarks about something more specific. Proverbs are either general truth or advice; whereas, idioms are neither truths nor advice. For instance, the proverb “home is where the heart is” is an advice, but some people may not agree that to be a fundamental truth as they may feel better when they are outdoors, so for those people, it can be used as a remark. Likewise, “a picture says a thousand words” is a truth for most people, but can also be used as a smart remark for the same reason as given above. In other words, it is not important to differentiate between idioms and proverbs so long as you understand the real intent and what they actually mean.
