What Is The Meaning Or Definition Of Cisgender / Cissexual:

The term “cisgender” is derived from “cis,” which means "the same as," or "on the same side of" or "not across” and “gender,” which means “related to gender,” hence, “cis-gender” literally means “people whose gender identity is the same as the sex they were assigned at birth.”

The term “cis” or “cisgender” is used to describe people whose gender identity is the same as the sex they were assigned at birth.

A cis person is someone who was born as a man and does manly things and likes to be referred to as a man, and someone who was born as a woman and does womanly things and likes to be referred to as a woman. So, it is a person who identifies as being of the same sex, as the sexual organs with which they were born.

An easy way to remember what "cis" means is to think of it as an abbreviation for "comfortable in skin." The opposite of cisgender is transexual, people who feel they were born in the wrong body, and hence, are "not comfortable in their own skin."

In other words, if someone was assigned male at birth and identifies as a man, then that person would be a cisgender male. And, if someone was assigned female at birth and identifies as a woman, then that person would be a cisgender female.

Another way to think about it is if a person is not transgender, then they are cisgender. It is a feeling of being the gender that one was assigned at birth, all the time, and it is a term that is generally used to highlight the privilege of people who are not transgender.

A cis male may be straight or gay. A cis male is not necessarily macho, or even of average masculine persona, and hence, might have some or many characteristics that are feminine, or female-like, but unless he seeks to project a female persona, he is still considered a cis male.
