What Is The Meaning Or Definition Of Heteronormative / Heteronormativity:

The term “heteronormative” is derived from the word “hetero,” which means “opposite,” and “normative,” which means “sexually normal,” hence, “hetero-normative” literally means “sexually normal to loving the opposite sex or gender.”

The term “heteronormative” or “heteronormativity” is used to describe a belief system of people who strongly believe that heterosexuality or opposite-sex attractions and relationships is the only norm or default sexuality and the only valid or legitimate sexual orientation that is accepted by both media, electronic media, education, lawmakers, and also a range of attitudes expressed or formed by society in general.

A heteronormative view requires alignment of biological sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender roles. All elements must be in sync for it to be called heteronormative.

Heteronormativity is the assumption or belief, in individuals as well as in institutions, that everyone must be heterosexual and that heterosexuality is superior to all other sexualities. It is the attitude that heteronormativity is an acceptable sexual orientation, which is males with females.

Heteronormativity promotes the ideology or perception that heterosexuality is normal, and that all other sexual orientations are "different” or “abnormal.” Heterosexuality in our society is the most accepted norm of sexuality, and any deviation from it is defined as “abnormal” and “unconventional.”

Heteronormativity refers to a cultural bias related to attitudes and behaviors that incorrectly makes the assumption that gender is binary, ignoring genders besides male and female, and that heterosexuality is superior to all other sexualities. It is believed to be the only normal and natural expression of sexuality.

Heteronormativity assumes that people must align with conventional expectations of society for gender identity, gender expression, as well as sexual and romantic attraction. It assumes that romantic and sexual relationships are most suitable between two people of the opposite sex.

For instance, someone assigned male at birth is expected to have a body that is biologically considered to be that of a male, identify as a boy or man, act masculine, fulfill the societal roles linked with boys or men, and get romantically and sexually attracted to women. Likewise, someone assigned female at birth is expected to have a body that is biologically considered to be that of a female, identify as a girl or woman, act feminine, fulfill the societal roles linked with girls or women, and get romantically and sexually attracted to men.

A heteronormative assumption is that a boy will grow up as a man and will get into a romantic relationship or marry a woman. A heteronormative assumption is that a girl will grow up as a woman and will get into a romantic relationship or marry a man.

Heteronormativity is a system of bias and discrimination that favors opposite-sex sexuality and relationships, and it also leads us to make the underlying assumption that only masculine men and feminine women are straight. The term heteronormativity is also used to describe laws, institutions, policies, and beliefs that reinforce the fixed categories of male and female, and such categories help in determining our sex, sexuality, sexual desire, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender roles.

Heteronormativity is generally associated with heterosexism and homophobia.
