What Is The Meaning Or Definition Of Heterosexism / Heterosexist:

The term “heterosexism” is derived from the word “hetero,” which means “opposite,” and “sexism,” which means “sexually offensive,” hence, “hetero-sexism” literally means “sexually offensive to loving the opposite sex or gender.”

The term “heterosexism” or “heterosexist” is an outdated term that is used in medicine or psychology to describe a typical behavior that grants preferential treatment to heterosexual people, reinforcing the idea that heterosexuality is somehow the conventional, or the more right way of sexuality, thereby making other sexualities either irrelevant or invisible.

Heterosexism is a system of oppression that considers heterosexuality to be the norm and discriminates against non-heterosexual behaviors and identities. Heterosexism is the societal and structural assumption that everyone must identify as heterosexual, making the assumption that heterosexuality is the default sexual orientation, and that anyone outside of if it is either abnormal or strange.

Heterosexism excludes the needs of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and other queer people. At the same time, it gives special privileges to heterosexual people.

Heterosexism is a systemic belief that heterosexuality and the binary gender system are superior to other non-binary genders, and heterosexual privilege refers to the societal advantages that heterosexuals get that LGBTQ people don't. For instance, a straight person doesn't have to worry about things such as renting a new apartment or getting a job, that non-heterosexual people have to face.

Heterosexism is a form of discrimination that designates gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and other sexual minorities as inferior or second-class citizens when it comes to various legal and civil rights, economic opportunities, and social equality. In its extremes, it condones discrimination, violence, and hatred.

Even though heterosexism is defined as anti-gay discrimination or prejudice by heterosexual people, people of any sexual orientation can hold attitudes and beliefs that promote internalized hatred of one's sexual orientation. It leads to invisibility and stigmatization of other sexualities.
