The term “queer” is derived from “queer,” which means “not sure about something,” and “sexuality,” which means “related to sexual orientation,” hence, “queer” literally means “not sure about one’s sexual orientation.”

The term “queer” is a slur or slang that is used to describe the sexual orientation of minorities who do not fall into a traditional gender role or sexual orientation, who are not exclusively heterosexual or heteroromantic, or who do not identify as cisgender, or that might not fit into specific categories, but cannot yet identify with a specific orientation.

Queer is a multi-faceted word that holds a different meaning to different people. Some people tend to take offense to the term queer, while others fully identify with it.

Queer is commonly used for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, or transgender people as an affirmation of their sexual orientation or gender identity as different and wonderful. Having said that, the use of the word queer opens up options beyond gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, to individuals who don’t fit perfectly into one of these categories, or prefer a category that is not reliant on sex and gender.

Queer, in a sense, is questioning, hence, people who identify as queer use this term because they find the other sexualities too limiting. There is a big overlap between queer and trans identities; however, not all queer people are trans, and likewise, not all trans people are queer.

The term “queer” can often be used interchangeably with LGBTQ, which is “queer people” instead of “LGBTQ people.” At one time, this term once had derogatory connotations, but queer has resurfaced as a common and socially acceptable way for LGBTQIA+ individuals to refer to themselves and their community.

Despite its growing use, some people still have negative associations with the term queer, and hence, don’t like to be referred to in this way. Queer, just like all other terms describing sexuality, should be used sensitively and respectfully.

The term queer acknowledges the fact that sexuality is a spectrum instead of a collection of independent and mutually exclusive sexuality categories. Some examples of modern expressions of queer identities include queer arts or cultural groups, and queer community or political groups.

The word queer is still sometimes used as a hateful or pejorative slur. However, it is being reclaimed by some as a self-affirming umbrella term, especially among those who identify their sexual orientations outside of mainstream heterosexual and gender norms.
