Sexual identity refers to a person’s conception of themselves. Example: “I am gay.”
Sexual identity is the manner in which one thinks of oneself in terms of to whom one is romantically or sexually attracted. Sexual identity may also refer to sexual orientation identity, which is when people choose, or identify or disidentify with a particular sexual orientation.
Sexual identity has been described as an element of a person's identity that reflects their sexual self-conceptualization, the integration of the respective identity elements, that is, moral, religious, cultural, and ethnic, into a greater overall identity is essential to the process of forming the multi-faceted development of identity. Sexual identity can change throughout a person's life, and sexual identity is more closely related to sexual behavior than sexual orientation.
