The term “closeted in the closet” is derived from “closeted,” which means “keeping something hidden,” and “closet,” which means “hiding something,” hence, “closeted-in-the-closet” literally means “trying to hide one’s own hidden sexual orientation and gender identity.”

The term “closeted” or "in the closet" is a slur or slang that is used to describe people in the LGBTQIA+ community who don’t publicly or openly share their sexual orientation, sexual preference, sexual attraction, sexual behavior, gender expression, or gender identity, to themselves and others.

The terms “closeted,” or “in the closet,” are often known as the exact opposite of “coming out.” The terms “closeted” and “coming out” are often used as antonyms for each other.

Closeted refers to the symbolic hidden or private space an LBGTQIA+ person comes from in the process of making decisions about revealing their sexuality and gender. Some individuals may decide to "come out" in specific communities, and "in the closet" in others, mainly because of social pressure or fear of prejudice, bias, discrimination, disapproval, mistreatment, rejection, or violence, and also loss of housing, job, etc.

Someone is said to be "in the closest" if one is secretly a homosexual, but does not know it yet or has chosen to ignore their inner feelings. A closeted person is a secretly gay person who is in denial, and has not yet shared their sexuality with the rest of the world.

A closeted person may hide their actual sexual orientation from their family, friends, and the public in general, often because of fear of negative reaction or rejection. A bi-sexual may decide not to "come out" of the closet and disclose their sexuality, but they may be "outed" against their will.
