What Is Meaning And Definition Of Coming Out / Out Of The Closet:

The term “coming out of the closet” is derived from “coming out,” which means “trying to accept and acknowledge something,” and “the closet,” which means “hiding something,” hence, “coming-out-of-the-closet” literally means “trying to accept one’s own hidden sexual orientation and gender identity.”

The term “coming out” or “out of the closet” is a slur or a slang that is used to describe the process to “come out” to oneself, by which one voluntarily accepts and/or comes to identify one’s own sexual orientation, sexual preference, sexual attraction, sexual behavior, gender expression, or gender identity, and share it with others.

There are other terms associated with “coming out,” such as “being out,” which means not concealing one's sexual orientation or gender identity. Also, “outing," which means making public the sexual orientation or gender identity of another who would prefer to keep this information private.

Coming out happens in different steps of stages, the first step is coming out to yourself by accepting your own sexuality, a process that ends at some point, and then the second step starts, which is coming out to other people such as friends and family. Coming out to oneself basically means one realizes their own sexual orientation, which may or may not be what they thought, and coming out to others means one share the newly discovered sexual identity with friends and family.

Coming out can be both personal, as well as a more public process as one can come out to oneself, or choose to share with other people in their life. The decision to come out is entirely personal, and each person must make their own decision about disclosing their sexuality and gender in their own way, taking their own time.

Coming out is a process that is unique for each person, and there is no right or wrong approach for coming out as it is a complicated, multi-layered, ongoing process by which one finds out and accepts one’s own sexuality and gender identity. The entire process of coming out, or the state of being out, is a means of self-acceptance and disclosure.

It’s important to note that each person’s coming out experience is different from others, and the act of coming out can be emotional as well as mentally stressful. When someone chooses to break their silence about their sexuality and gender, they are said to be “coming out” of the closet.

Coming out is a process of self-figuring, self-discovering, self-accepting, and self-experiencing out that one is a gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, etc. The exact opposite of people who are yet to come out, or have opted not to do so, are labeled as closeted or being in the closet.

For many LGBTQIA+ people, “coming out” is not a one-time event, but an ongoing process with a series of moments and conversations. Some LGBTQIA+ people decide to keep their sexuality, gender, or intersex status private, while others choose to share it with their loved ones, or the general public.

LGBTQ+ people who have already revealed or no longer feel the need to conceal their sexual orientation or gender identity are said to be out, that is, openly disclosing their sexual preference. Outing is the intentional or unintentional disclosure of an LGBT person's sexual orientation or gender identity, without their consent, whereas, outing oneself is self-disclosure.

Glass closet means the open secret of when being LGBT is considered a broadly accepted fact even if they have not officially come out, or self-disclosed. Coming out is basically the act of a homosexual becoming more open about their own sexuality towards the same gender.
